Specialty Caulking FAQS

Where should I caulk in my home?

Caulk gaps, cracks, and joints in your home where you wish to keep water and/or air out. The following are some frequent areas where caulk/sealant is considered necessary:

  • Attic floor penetration, knee walls, and cracks where air may enter/exit from the outside
  • Doors and windows
  • Chimneys
  • Rim joists in the basement (where the foundation meets the wood frame)
  • Where the house's faucets or pipes meet
  • Exterior siding cracks or where two different materials meet (e.g., siding and chimney or foundation)
  • Close to air vents and ducting
  • Penetrations in the walls such as electrical wiring and outlets, plumbing, recessed lighting, and phone or TV cables
  • Gutter leaks or flashing cracks
  • Sinks, faucets, and backsplashes for kitchens
  • Bathroom tubs, showers, along top of shower surround, backsplashes
  • Between crown molding, baseboards, chair rails and wallboard

Does caulk/sealant expire?

The bottom of the cartridge for caulks and sealants has a "Use By" date. This will indicate whether the caulk/sealant is still fresh and usable.

How long does silicone sealant typically take to cure (dry)?

A 3/16′′ bead "usually" cures in 24 hours. The cure time may vary depending on the amount of moisture in the air. The curing process will be slowed if there is a lack of humidity. If the product exhibits curing signs, such as a change in original consistency, it should cure but may take longer than usual. Under cooler or dryer circumstances, caulk may take up to 48 hours to cure.
